AMLÉ were delighted to be invited to attend a student mental health symposium organised by Dr Margaret McLafferty and the Student Mental Health Research Network. The event took place on the 7th of May in Ulster University’s Belfast campus.

The keynote speaker was Dr Nicola Byrom from King’s College in London, who has done an immense amount of research in the UK on the area of student mental health.

Other speakers included Dr Ross Woods from the HEA, who spoke about the intersection of student wellbeing and student success, Caroline Mahon who spoke about the Healthy Campus Framework, and Professor Siobhan O’Neill who spoke about the mental health landscape in Northern Ireland from a policy perspective. There was also an expert panel, lightning talks, and a session on various special interest groups related to the network.

Overall it was a fascinating event with lots of different perspectives on student mental health from people working across the sector. The research network is always open to new members who are interested in the topic of student mental health – if interested, please contact Dr Margaret McLafferty at margaret.mclafferty@atu.ie.
